Car buried in snow

How Can I Improve My Fuel Economy in Winter?

Winter can be one of the most frustrating seasons. The cold and snow can be fun at first, but it quickly wears out its welcome. It is also incredibly tough on our bodies and our cars. The wear and tear it causes to our cars can cause a lot of headaches.

There are a lot of things that you’ll notice about your car in the winter. One of the biggest things that will catch your eye is a drop in fuel economy. Your engine is working a lot harder in the frigid temperatures, so it is using more fuel as a result. Is there any way to fight back against this reduced efficiency?

Improving Your Fuel Economy in Winter

Most people want to quickly get back inside or somewhere warm whenever they have to step outside in winter. Your car feels the same way. Parking somewhere warm or covered can help keep it warm which will save the engine from getting too cold. Idling your car or warming it up doesn’t help your engine too much as it will warm up faster while driving.

On warmer days, you should also take the time to check your tire pressure. Cold air naturally reduces your car’s tire pressure which can reduce your fuel economy. If you have a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle, then you actually can warm up the cabin while it is plugged in. While you are driving, you should use plug-in seat warmers rather than the cabin heater for hybrids and EVs.
